Cartographers have long adhered to the view of the map as primarily a medium of communication [1]. Recently, influenced by ideas of scientific visualization and exploratory data analysis, they started to pay more attention to the role of the map as a tool to support visual thinking and decision making [2,3]. To play this role effectively, the map needs two principal additions: interaction and dynamics.
